Crossing Border
From the begining 2015, due to its geographical location, Hungary has become a gateway to the European Union for hundreds of thousands of migrants and asylum seekers who have already journeyed through Turkey, Greece and the Balkans in search of international protection. There were 50,065 irregular border crossings completed or attempted in 2014, which is a dramatic increase compared to the previous years: 26,061 irregular border crossings in 2013 and 9,933 irregular border crossings in 2012. Due to wars, religious and ethnic massacres in the he Middle East and Africa, this year close to 200,000 people crossed the Hungarian-Serbian border at the moment.
I noticed the gravity of the situation at the end of 2014 when I made a report from refugees by the southern border of Hungary. As photojournalis who experienced in wars and conflict zones I feel obliged to show the effects of this situation. That was the point when I decided to do a long therm project on this topic.
I shocked to see how many people, families and children undertake this giant journey only with a backpack. They had to leave their previous life, house, family, almost everything they had before. Lots of them had to sell all of their goods and properties to be able to finance the trip. During their journey they come through many of humiliation, misery and harsch conditions and live like homeless in foreign countries.
I hope I can open people’s eyes and to make them understand just somebody whose life were in danger undertake the difficulty of a journey like this and we must help them on their way to a normal life.
In hope of a better life they just want to get through in these countries invisible. In most of these cases the border guard police catch them after the border crossing and take them to the office to record they data and take a fingerprint. The asylum seekers try to passing by this procerure because they will be deported to the country where they have been registrated first time in the European Union when the destination country doesn’t give them refugee status.
